Description
Today you will receive a guided tour of Jordan’s proud capital, Amman. By exploring both the ancient and modern parts of the city you’ll gain insight into the daily life as well as the historic culture of Jordan.
The tour includes the crumbliAmmntown. Marvel at the colossal pillars of the Temple of Hercules (larger than any temple in Rome) and wander around the remains of the Governor’s Palace and Mosque, both later Islamic constructions.
For a more detailed view of the country’s history, you will visit the Archaeological Museum, built within the remains of the Citadel. The museum presents an array of artifacts from archaeological sites in Jordan, dating from prehistoric times to the 15th century.
The most impressive sight, however, is the spectacular panorama of the sprawling city below, where Romans settled on top of Biblical remains and whose chaotic streets are wedged into the valley. You will descend from the Citadel into the capital’s throng where you can join the locals on the steps of what is the most impressive remnant of Roman rule: a 6000-seat, beautifully restored amphitheater.
The Jordan Folklore Museum is located next door on the western side of the theatre. Here you can view items representing three different Jordanian cultures – Bedu (desert life), Reef (village life), and Madinah (city life).
You are then led back into the 21st century as you make your way into the city center, a vibrant hub of sizzling kebab stalls, buzzing cafes, and sensual souks. You can shop to your heart’s content, browsing the traditional stalls and contemporary malls, where you’ll find everything from tiny souvenirs to expensive designer wear.
